Duarte bills itself as the City of Health. The small, progressive community has prioritized parks, hiking trails, bike trails, and gathering spaces to foster community livability. The city is home to City of Hope Medical Center, which has for many years been a world-renowned leader in battling cancer and other catastrophic diseases. It's also known for dedication to patient well-being.
Many of the pioneer families who settled in Duarte in the mid-1800s found it a healthy area with a pleasant climate and fertile soil. These settlers were ethnically diverse, and that diversity continues today in the friendly neighborhoods of Duarte.
The first known inhabitants of the area were Shoshonean-speaking Native Americans who are now called the Tongva. Europeans entered the area in 1769, and the Franciscans later established the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. In 1841, former Mexican Corporal Andres Duarte was granted almost 7,000 acres of high-quality land in the upper San Gabriel Valley. He named it Rancho Azusa de Duarte, from which the city gets its name. Most of the Rancho was sold and became Duarte and neighboring cities. Duarte prospered in agriculture, specializing in citrus production.
