When to Visit Charleston, South Carolina

As a southern city, Charleston typically has mild winters and hot, humid summers. For the best weather, most tourists prefer to visit during the pleasant spring and fall seasons. April and May tend to offer the best weather with the most sunshine, although hotel prices can be high during this high season. The fall features similarly pleasant weather with slightly more rain showers and generally lower costs.

If you can stand the heat, summer can be a good time to visit Charleston, especially during a school break. To save big on hotel prices, however, consider visiting during the winter. The weather is cool with temperatures in the 50s, but holiday events and other festivals keep the atmosphere perfectly warm.

Best Hotel Discounts in Charleston, South Carolina

If you're a member of a few select groups, you won't have to worry about paying full price at Charleston hotels. At Zero George Street, AAA members save 10 percent or more on king and queen rooms. At hotels like the Fairfield Inn & Suites Charleston North/Ashley Phosphate, senior travelers and AARP members get the lowest rates available, generally 10 percent lower than the standard room rate. Military members and government employees can rely on low rates at hotels like the Best Western Magnolia Inn & Suites.

Best Value Options in Charleston, South Carolina

Just north of downtown Charleston, you'll find numerous hotels that strike a balance between price and comfort. For a good price with solid amenities, consider these great value options.

Only a short drive northeast of Charleston, the Holiday Inn Charleston - Mount Pleasant is convenient to Mt. Pleasant, the USS Yorktown, and the Naval and Maritime Museum. This hotel has just short of 160 rooms, with choices ranging from standard king and double rooms to junior and king suites. Go for a swim in the seasonal outdoor pool, and work up a sweat in the 24-hour fitness center. At the end of the day, have a drink in the hotel bar. Catch up on work with the in-room workspace and complimentary Wi-Fi, or head down to the hotel's 24-hour business center. If you're planning an event in the area, reserve the Holiday Inn's 5,000 square feet of conference and meeting space.

Located north of Charleston off Interstate 26, the Fairfield Inn & Suites Charleston North/Ashley Phosphate is near highlights like Penn's Art Gallery, Charleston Southern University, and Charleston International Airport. Stay in one of the hotel's 84 rooms, and enjoy homelike conveniences like microwaves and refrigerators. Get sweaty in the hotel's workout room, and cool off at the outdoor pool. In the morning, enjoy the complimentary buffet breakfast while you read a complimentary newspaper. Free self-parking makes the Fairfield Inn an even greater value.

Not far from the Fairfield Inn, the Hampton Inn & Suites North Charleston offers a good value near Trident Technical College and Wescott Plantation. Get comfortable in a standard queen or king room, or opt for a larger studio suite with a separate sitting area and sofa bed. All rooms feature refrigerators so you can keep cool drinks on hand, as well as LCD TVs with cable programming so you can catch up on shows. Work up an appetite at the seasonal outdoor pool and on-site fitness center, and enjoy a filling hot and cold buffet breakfast on the house.

For an affordable stay near the airport, set your sights on the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Charleston Airport, which is also close to Interstate 26 and the U.S. Army Reserve School. Get low rates on basic double or king rooms, or spend a little more on a suite or a special hotel experience package. All 149 rooms feature flat-screen TVs so you can kick back and watch a movie, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi so you can stay in touch with friends and family at home. Request a crib if you're traveling with family, and take the kids to the outdoor pool. Hop on the hotel's complimentary area shuttle to get a ride to local attractions, and use the shuttle to get to the airport at no charge.

Charleston, SC summarized

Sitting atop the peninsula's rocky cliffs, Sorrento remains Italy's last town of significance on the side of the bay. The next city of importance is Pompeii, long reduced to volcanic ashes. Sorrento is completely a resort, with its desolate location and mild climate drawing tourists looking for an exclusive getaway for more than two hundred years. The Southern Italian city enjoys resort year-round prices, so it's generally better to keep a few extra to enjoy the rest of the package-tour territory. The small town in Campania is reachable by the Circumvesuviana rail line, which offers guests with scenic spectacles of the Isle of Capri, the Vesuvius, and the Bay of Naples. Guests can also choose to enter the city through the high cliffs of Amalfi Drive. Numerous ferry boats can take you in the town, which have once carried the likes of Luciano Pavarotti and Enrico Caruso. Never leave the resort town without sampling its limoncello, and other offerings of olives, nuts, fruits, and wines.
