People literally come by the trainload for the festival. Amtrak stops at the Southern Railway Freight Depot in Lexington just once a year for the festival, with rides offered from Raleigh aboard The Piedmont or from Charlotte on The Carolinian. Expect a warm welcome upon arrival or departure thanks to the town's special hospitality suite set up in the depot for the occasion.
Once you arrive, head straight for the town specialty, slow-roasted barbecue pork, cooked over hickory wood. Numerous other entertaining events at the festival include BMX stunt shows, car shows, arts and crafts, and live music concerts on eight stages.
However, there's no need to wait for a festival to enjoy great barbecue in Lexington because the city boasts over 20 barbecue restaurants. The hickory-smoked barbecue is basted in a sauce called dip, a regional blend of vinegar, ketchup, water, salt, and other spices. Each restaurant's sauce recipe is closely guarded and can range from tangy to sweet or spicy, but the vinegar base remains a staple.
You can also tell a North Carolina barbecue sandwich by its distinctive red slaw, a combination of spiced cabbage injected with vinegar, ketchup, and black pepper, and never containing mayonnaise. Given all the tasty pig you can get around town, it's no wonder that the pig is considered an art form. Look for artisan made fiberglass "Pigs in the City” sculptures on display throughout Uptown Lexington each fall.
Come for the barbecue or the wine and stay for the friendly people and easygoing southern way of life. Once you arrive in Lexington, you may never want to leave!
