Since it is incorporated as its own city, South Houston is not within the city limits of Houston. Two years after its incorporation, South Houston suffered severe damage as the result of a hurricane. After rebuilding, the city grew rapidly between the 1940s and 1960s.
South Houston has a diverse population with more than three-quarters of its residents coming from Hispanic or Latino descent. Many of these residents are of Mexican descent. One of the most recognized citizens of South Houston is George Christy, who served as the mayor for two terms, one from 1949 to 2951 and one from 1960-1964. He also owned a circus, and his elephants helped build the Spencer Highway. As of 2010, nearly 17,000 people called South Houston home.
When to Visit South Houston, Texas
South Houston is close to the Gulf of Mexico, which means its climate is warm and pleasant throughout much of the year. In the late fall, the risk of hurricanes increases, so you may see a drop in hotel prices during this time of the year. During the winter months, snowfall is rare and the climate stays mild, making South Houston a nice place to escape the icy temperatures found in other areas. Pack layers if you're visiting during the winter, as it does get chilly when the sun goes down.
The summer months bring heat and humidity, so this is another time when hotel prices will go down. Many of the locals will pack up and head out of town during July and August, so you might notice that attractions and sites are less crowded.
Every year, Houston hosts the Houston Shakespeare Festival in late July through early August, the Houston International Jazz Festival in early August, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Grande Parade, which draws 300,000 people. Another major happening is the World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest in March. These events often put a strain on hotel all the way to South Houston and beyond, so the prices may increase.
