European Americans settled in what is now known as Port Orchard in 1854 when Daniel S. Howard and Captain William Renton set up a sawmill. By 1886, resident Frederick Stevens platted the town and called it Sidney after his father. Shortly thereafter, the Navy sought locations for a West Coast installation, finding an ideal sport in Orchard Bay that would eventually become the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. In 1892, Sidney became the county seat and was officially renamed Port Orchard.
Today, Port Orchard is a busy waterfront community that's popular with both business and leisure travelers. The city boasts a thriving marina, waterfront park, foot ferry, award-winning eateries, and countless antique shops. It's also home to the New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber, creator of the Hallmark Channel's primetime series “Cedar Cove.”
Whatever your reasons for traveling to Port Orchard, it's important to find the right hotel that allows you to explore everything this vibrant community has to offer.
When to Visit Port Orchard, WA
The best time to visit Port Orchard and other communities dotting the Puget Sound is in the fall from September to October. Hotel rates drop off after the peak tourist season. However, the weather is still pleasant enough to enjoy local hiking and outdoor attractions. The community also features seasonal harvest festivals, and its farmers market continues through October, ensuring there's plenty for visitors to experience. Just remember to pack a few layers and an umbrella, especially if you're visiting closer to winter, as evening temperatures can feel chilly.
If you don't mind paying a little more for accommodations, you can't beat a trip to Port Orchard in the summer. The summer months are mild with average temperatures resting at a comfy 75 degrees. You'll still need a light jacket in case of chilly winds, and hotel availability is limited. However, if you plan your trip several weeks in advance and remain flexible with your travel plans, you'll have no problem snagging a prime location.
Spring offers the same money-saving rates as the fall season, but biting Pacific winds tend to keep most tourists away. In fact, average lows hit the low- to mid-40s in April and May, so you'll need to pack warmer layers and expect ample rain.
Since most tourists tend to stay away from the Puget Sound during the winter months, November through February offers rock-bottom hotel rates that may be too tempting to pass up. Keep in mind, however, that sightseeing during the winter is difficult because of cold temperatures and precipitation, unless you're planning to engage in winter sports such as snowboarding and skiing. Port Orchard and its nearby communities serve as the perfect home base for adventurers planning to hit the slopes at Mount Rainier or the Cascade Range.
