Located 30 miles south of downtown Atlanta, McDonough is one of many beloved towns in the Atlanta metropolitan area. It was founded in 1823 and named after naval officer Commodore Thomas MacDonough. Like many older cities, McDonough was built based on a traditional town square design that included a county courthouse, jail building, and main street.
Today, many of these buildings still stand, with the addition of many excellent restaurants, shopping locations, and attractions throughout the city. Whatever your reason for visiting McDonough, your first step should be finding the right hotel for your needs so you can enjoy everything the city has to offer.
When to Visit McDonough, GA
McDonough is a great place to visit year-round, but one of the best times is from June to August. During these months, there are plenty of events to attend and many fun attractions to enjoy. You can experience the city's 4th of July Celebration, which includes a Car and Motorcycle Show, Firecracker 5K/10K Race, and Live Music – shop at one of the city's unique boutiques, or take a self-guided history tour. Because this is peak season, prepare for large crowds and expensive hotel rates. However, you may be able to get fairly good deals if you book your room in advance.
From September to November, the weather cools down and temperatures drop to in the mid 60s. It's now the perfect time to take advantage of McDonough's fall festivals, scarecrow contests, and other attractions. If you're traveling with kids, go pumpkin picking at Southern Belle Farm, play a game (or three) of bowling at Fun Bowl and Fun Town of Henry County, or visit Atlanta Motor Speedway. There won't be nearly as many crowds during this time, so you can expect hotel rates to be affordable.
While many vacation destinations shut down during the winter months, McDonough remains open with plenty to do. You can experience the annual Christmas Parade, ring in the New Year at the Geranium Drop, or take a tour through the Historical Veterans Military Museum. Although the weather will be cold, this is the perfect season for budget travelers to visit, as hotel rates will be affordable and crowds will be few.
From March to May, temperatures rise to the mid and upper 70s, and two of the city's most popular events take place — the Geranium Festival and Geranium Jam. If you miss these, you can always enjoy one of the city's other great attractions, such as fishing in HCWSA Reservoirs, golfing at Cotton Fields Golf Club, or exploring Sandy Ridge Park. Keep in mind, you may experience an occasional rain shower or two, but hotel rates will be affordable and crowds will be manageable.
