June, July, and October are the rainiest, with each month getting an average of more than 5 inches (with more than 6 inches in June). Highs from November through February stay under 80, with lows sometimes dipping into the single digits from January through March. The hot, muggy summers discourage many from visiting during that time, as do the large crowds that swarm to the coast for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean. Luckily, you can avoid much of the surge if you stay in the small town of Lorton. To enjoy some days with temperatures warm enough for water sports before the rates increase for the summer, visit during April or early May. Otherwise, your best bet is to visit during the fall. Venture into the Coastal Plains to see some stunning fall foliage.
