The Farmers and Merchants Union Bank is a historic commercial building founded in 1919 and designed by the "father of skyscrapers" Louis Sullivan. The bank is still in operation today and is the oldest bank in the city. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
The iconic Chapel Street Water Tower has been a city symbol since it was built in 1896. For 75 years, it was the only source of water the city had. The structure was still partially used even after a new modern water tower was constructed and discontinued only in 1997. At some point, it was in line for demolition; however, the Historic Landmarks and Preservation Commission convinced the city to use the demolition funds for the Chapel's reconstruction instead.
