The area people we encountered were all real nice,friendly and told us some good advice on were to go and things to do.
Townsend is quiet, away from busy, noisy Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Convenient to the park. Scenery is beautiful! Good food, coffee houses, gas, Ace Hardware, historic places and river rafting in season.
The people were fantastic and friendly and also said hello.
It was what I would expect in a vacation area having a nice variety of things to do, food and local wineries. Loved it!

The city of Townsend is close to several outdoor hikes, camp sites, and easy access to the National Park. It is close enough to Pigeon Forge if those daily activities are what you are looking for but enjoy returning to the calm and peaceful ambience for the evening.
I love Townsend. It is quaint, quiet and no heavy traffic. A great place to stay while visiting the Smokies.

We stay here because it is close to Cades Cove and quieter. Not crowded like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.
I hesitate to say too many positive things about Townsend simply because I don't want the “tourist" crowd to find it! If the crowds and the tourist crap of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge aren't your thing, if you're into nature walks, quiet destinations, hearing a river instead of traffic, then Townsend is your place! The perfect place for photographers and artists to quietly let their creativity loose!

Several good restaurants and close to most major attractions.
Everything close, easy to travel place to place and 15 mins from Pigeon Forge.
The Black Bear Cafe had the best fish I've ever tasted and just a down home environment
