The university is situated in Santa Clara, California (2006 est. population 108,518), adjacent to the city of San Jose, California in Santa Clara County (est. population 1.8 million), which anchors the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Also known by the abbreviation SCU, its students and 71,000 alumni are called “Santa Clarans” and its athletics teams are called the Broncos. In many[weasel words] of its informational and promotional publications the school is billed as "The Jesuit University in Silicon Valley." Built around historic Mission Santa Clara, the present university is home to a population of nearly 5,000 undergraduate and 3,500 masters, J.D., and Ph.D. students. The institution employs over 450 full time faculty members, who are divided between four professional schools and the College of Arts and Sciences, all of which are located on the 106 acre (0.4 km²) mission campus. In July 2009, the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley (JST), formerly an independent school, legally merged with the university taking the name "Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University." Although a division of SCU, the school retains its campus in Berkeley, California. JST is one of two Jesuit seminaries in the United States with ecclesiastical faculties approved by the Vatican's Congregation for Catholic Education. The other seminary, Weston Jesuit School of Theology, completed a similar affiliation with Boston College in June 2008, becoming Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. For the 2008–2009 academic year, the university's operating budget was $311 million, and the university's endowment was over $697 million. For the same period, undergraduate tuition and fees was $34,950 and the average cost of room and board was $11,067. Santa Clara is civilly chartered and governed by a board of trustees, which appoints the president. By internal statute, the president must be a member of the Jesuit order; although, the membership of the board is primarily lay. About forty Jesuit priests and brothers are active teachers and administrators in various departments and centers located on the main campus in Santa Clara. Additionally, fourteen Jesuits currently hold faculty positions at the university's Jesuit School of Theology located in Berkeley. In total, Jesuits comprise around seven percent of the permanent faculty and hold teaching positions in biology, computer engineering, counseling psychology, economics, English, history, law, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, religious studies, theology, and theater arts. They also serve in campus ministry and residence-hall ministry, and some act as faculty directors in residential learning communities. SCU maintains its Catholic and Jesuit affiliation and supports numerous initiatives intended to further its religious mission. Students are invited to attend the Sunday evening student Masses in the mission church and encouraged to participate in campus ministry programs and lectures. All bachelor’s degrees require three religious studies courses as part of the academic core. An emphasis on social justice is furthered through the Pedro Arrupe Partnership and Kolvenbach Solidarity Programs, which offer service opportunities in the community and immersion opportunities throughout the world. The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics and the Center for Science, Technology, and Society also have programs that serve the university's Catholic, Jesuit identity.

Mission Santa Clara de Asis

Hotels Close to Mission Santa Clara de Asis
Mission Santa Clara de Asís was founded on January 12, 1777 and named for Clare of Assisi, the founder of the order of the Poor Clares. Although ruined and rebuilt six times, the settlement was never abandoned. The first mission to be built to honor a woman, the outpost was originally established as La Misión Santa Clara de Thamien (or Mission Santa Clara de Thamien) at the Indian village of So-co-is-u-ka (meaning "Laurelwood," located on the Guadalupe River) January 12, 1777. There they erected a cross and shelter for worship to bring Christianity to the Ohlone and Costanoan peoples. Floods, fires, and earthquakes damaged many of the early structures and forced relocation to higher ground. The second site is known as Mission Santa Clara de Asís. A subsequent site of the Mission dating from 1784 to 1819 is located several hundred yards west of the De La Cruz overpass of the Caltrain track; moreover, several Native American burial sites have been discovered near this subsequent site. The current site, home to the first college in Alta California, dates back to 1828. Initially, there was tension between the people of the Mission and those in the nearby Pueblo de San Jose over disputed ownership rights of land and water. The tension was relieved when a road, the Alameda, was built by two hundred Indians to link the communities together. On Sundays, people from San Jose would come to the Mission for services, until the building of St. Joseph's Church in 1803. In that year, the mission of Santa Clara reported an Indian population of 1,271. In the same tabular report, its resident priest estimated that 5,000 cattle, 7,000 sheep, 2,200 horses and 30 mules were on mission lands, while about 3,000 fanegas of grain (some 220 pounds each of wheat, barley or corn)had been harvested. In 1850, California became a state and priests of the Jesuit Order took over the Mission Santa Clara de Asís. Father John Nobili, S.J., was put in charge of the Mission. He began a college on the Mission site in 1851, which grew into Santa Clara University; it is the only mission to become part of a university, and it is also the oldest university in California. Throughout the history of the Mission, the bells have rung faithfully every evening, a promise made to King Charles III of Spain when he sent the original bells to the Mission in 1777. He asked that the bells be rung each evening at 8:30 in memory of those who had died. Mission Santa Clara de Asís sits on the campus of the Santa Clara University. After a 1925 fire destroyed the 1828 mission structure, the church's parochial functions were transferred to St. Clare Parish Church, on Lexington Street west of the campus. A rebuilt and restored Mission Santa Clara was consecrated in 1929, when it assumed its primary modern function as chapel and centerpiece of the university campus. It is open to visitors every day; the Mission museum is located in the university's De Saisset Museum.

Santa Clara owns and operates an electric utility called Silicon Valley Power. In 2005 Silicon Valley Power brought online the Donald Von Raesfeld (DVR) Power Plant. The new combined-cycle gas turbine plant produces 147 megawatts of electricity for the city and its residents. As a result, the going rate for electricity in Santa Clara is considerably cheaper than that offered by Northern California's dominant utility, Pacific Gas and Electric.

The San Jose Municipal Rose Garden (5.5 acres) is a rose garden located at the intersection of Naglee Avenue and Dana Avenue, San Jose, California, in the Rose Garden neighborhood. It is open to the public daily without charge. Dogs are not allowed. The garden was once a prune orchard, but was bought by San Jose in 1927 and is now exclusively devoted to roses. It features more than 3,500 rose shrubs representing 189 rose varieties. As an official Display Garden for the All-America Rose Selections (AARS) the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden receives AARS award winning roses in advance of public release. In the early 2000s, City budget cuts impacted the Rose Garden. In 2005 the AARS put the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden on probation and it was at risk of losing AARS accreditation. In 2007 Friends of the San Jose Rose Garden (FSJRG) was established, a volunteer nonprofit organization whose mission was to restore and renovate the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden. In December 2008 the AARS lifted the garden from probation and restored full accreditation. In 2009 over 800 new roses were planted as part of the restoration project. On May 2, 2009 the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden was rededicated as an official All-America Rose Selections Test Garden, one of 23 in the USA and the only one in Northern California. The rededication ceremony and ribbon cutting of new Test Beds was conducted by the Mayor of San Jose Chuck Reed, the President of the All America Rose Selections, Tom Carruth, San Jose City Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio, and Co-Founders of the Friends of the San Jose Rose Garden, Beverly Rose Hopper and Terry Reilly. The Winchester Mystery House is a well-known California mansion that was under construction continuously for 38 years, and is reported to be haunted. It once was the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, the widow of gun magnate William Wirt Winchester, but is now a tourist attraction. Under Winchester's day-to-day guidance, its "from-the-ground-up" construction proceeded around-the-clock, without interruption, from 1884 until her death on September 5, 1922, at which time work immediately ceased. The cost for such constant building has been estimated at about US $5.5 million (if paid in 1922, this would be equivalent to almost $70 million in 2008 dollars). The mansion is renowned for its size and utter lack of any master building plan. According to popular belief, Winchester thought the house was haunted by the ghosts of individuals killed by Winchester rifles, and that only continuous construction would appease them. It is located at 525 South Winchester Blvd. in San Jose, California.[

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph is a large Roman Catholic church located in Downtown San Jose. The minor basilica is the cathedral for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Jose in California. The basilica is named for Saint Joseph, patron saint of the universal church. The original St. Joseph's Church was built on the site of the current basilica in 1803, and was the first non-mission parish built in California. The original adobe structure was damaged by earthquakes in 1818 and 1822, and a new adobe church was built from 1835 to 1846. The second church was severely damaged the 1868 Hayward earthquake, and work on the third church began in 1869. The third church was destroyed by fire in 1875, and a temporary fourth church was built a few blocks away while the fifth and current church was being constructed. The fifth church was dedicated by Joseph Alemany, Archbishop of San Francisco, in 1877 while construction continued. The current portico was completed in 1884, and the large dome was finished in 1885. In 1981, a major renovation project was begun at the church, which was to become the cathedral for the new Roman Catholic Bishop of San Jose. In 1985, the church was elevated to a cathedral, pending completion of the restoration in 1990. It replaced Saint Patrick Proto-Cathedral Parish, located a few blocks away, as the cathedral of the diocese. The cathedral was made a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1997. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph is listed as a California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mission Statement Montgomery Theater is a uniquely intimate, non-profit theatrical enterprise Dedicated to bringing new life to old tales and giving age and wisdom to new ones. Our mission is to serve the play by telling the story well, serve the artists by fulfilling their creative passions, and serve the audience by challenging and entertaining them. Brief History The structure that houses Montgomery Theater in Southeastern Pennsylvania was once the old Souderton firehouse. This "turn of the century" building was bought by the Souderton Borough in order to secure that Montgomery Theater stays in the center of town, thus spearheading revitalization of the Souderton-Telford Communities. In 2002 the main floor of the structure, the original engine room, was renovated into a new 122-seat theater. The first floor and the original arena was once the firehouse banquet hall and senior citizens center. On April 30, 1993, Montgomery Theater Project took occupancy of this lower level and transformed it into a modest 70-seat theater and opened Jonathan Daly's "the William" on June 10, 1993. Since then, Montgomery Theater has presented over seventy productions mixing original, classical, musical and performance art style of presentations to their blend of theatrical events. This lower level space, renamed the "Project Stage," will continue as a performance area designed for alternative and experimental theater, educational theater and children's theater. The top floor of the building has also been renovated in order to provide the theater with office space, alternative rehearsal space, costume and props storage, as well as green room and dressing room facilities.
