Rock Creek Park covers over 2,000 acres of land in northwest Washington D.C., spread out in several sections. The biggest section is north of the National Zoological Park, following the path of Rock Creek up to the D.C.-Maryland Border. Open during daylight hours, the park has a forest-like feel, with many trees, wild animals, and fresh air. There are three visitor centers: the Nature Center and Planetarium, the Old Stone House, and the Peirce Barn and Mill. They each have different hours of operation, which can be seen on the National Park Service's website for Rock Creek Park. Near the park are many different attractions, such as the National Zoo with its many exotic animals. You may also desire to attend an event at the McLean Gardens Ballroom, which hosts special events in a place historically known to presidents and socialites as the only place to be. The Friendship Recreation Center, otherwise known as Turtle Park, is a great place to go as well, offering play areas and sport courts and fields not far away. In central D.C. are the White House, U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, and many more government buildings, some of which you can tour. And there are hundreds of monuments and memorials located around D.C. dedicated to presidents, famous persons, veterans, and more that you can view for the most part at any time. To access these attractions, you can use the WMATA Metro and bus lines, or there is limited parking available on some streets.
