When to Visit

Washington, DC has two distinct busy seasons. The first is from mid-January to June when Congress is in session. The city is packed with business visitors during the first half of the year. This is compounded by families and school groups visiting from mid-March to June. The city's famous cherry blossoms emerge during this time as well, making Washington, DC a particularly alluring, if busy, destination. Congress is in again from the second week in September until Thanksgiving, bringing a new surge of people to DC.

If possible, plan your visit around the end of August or the beginning of September. Crowds are at their lowest during this time, and hotel rates take a dive during these weeks as well. July is another option if you're looking for low crowds, but the weather is hot and humid, which is part of why the capital is so empty during this month. Winter is another low season for DC, but the weather is typically a deterrent, particularly for leisure travelers. You can find freezing temperatures and the occasional snowstorm during winter.

The architecture of the city is powerful and moving. On our tour, the woman next to me kept saying, "It's so beautiful. It's so beautiful." Most people on our trip had no idea how moving DC is, with its solemn memorials, free museums, and thriving downtown area. One of the unexpected highlights, believe it or not, is the Forever 21 store building - worth a detour to see that! The personnel who work with the National Park Service are knowledgeable and friendly. The Navy Memorial plaza is gorgeous (and good for dog watching) and you should plan to stop into the museum via the doors on the corner near the statue of the sailor.

Well, the city itself was fine and the air and space museum was great.Lunch at Union Station was OK, but it's a far walk in the rain to all the main attractions. Unfortunately, our trip to the Smithsonian Zoo was completely soiled when a group of white boys wore "Make America Great Again" hats called a group of my students the "N" word as well as some other foul terms. As a white teacher of mostly black students this disgusts me and make me so angry that we are in this place as a country. People need to respect other despite their differences.
