Visit Fort Fremont on Saint Helena Island for a glimpse back at the Spanish-American War of the 1890s. You can take a free tour on the fourth Saturday of each month. You'll find a number of still-standing buildings on the tour, including what was once a brick hospital, but is now a private residence. Visit the barracks, officer quarters, and mess hall during the tour, as well.
If you love nature, consider taking a self-guided tree walk tour. The beautiful trees around Beaufort are reason enough to get out and stretch your legs. For another piece of history, visit the Hunting Island Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1859 and is open to the public. Walk up all 167 steps of the spiral staircase to see the world from a different angle.

Beaufort is gorgeous, and is history preserved. We did a self-guided walking tour from a guide book. It was a great way to see this beautiful town and learn something about its past.

The military base was amazing. The world outside the base was a bit different. The Chick fil a in Beaufort did a very good job. That was the only vendor I used outside of the hotel.

I have liked Beaufort since 1975 when I was sent to Parris Island, which is adjacent to Beaufort, to be a Drill Instructor. It is a charming little city.

I love visiting Beaufort. Beaufort and Hunting Island hold a special place in my heart that goes back 25 years. I live in Mesa, Arizona and when people ask me why I brag about South Carolina all the time I inform them that it's the people and the southern charm. The river walk is so serene with the swings and peaceful aura.
