Georgetown University is located in the Georgetown neighborhood, in northwest Washington, D.C., just 3.5 miles from the center of the city. The University was founded in 1789, and is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit University in the nation. You can tour the University throughout the year on weekdays and many Saturday mornings with a reservation, available online. The surrounding area also contains many unique historic items of interest. The Old Stone House, for example, built in 1765, is the oldest building in Washington D.C. that is still intact. It can be viewed from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, except on major holidays. Or the Dumbarton House has been made a museum, containing artwork, furniture, and architecture of a Federal period style. It is open for tours from Tuesday to Sunday, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A variety of other attractions, including restaurants, clubs, shops of many kinds, and more are to be found in Georgetown. Visit Blues Alley, the oldest jazz supper club still in business in America, for dinner and a show any night of the week. Or head down to the Georgetown dock and take a ride on the Potomac with the Potomac Riverboat Company, which offers sightseeing tours of many locations on the river. Parking at Georgetown University is available on campus, or the best transportation to the area is the Metro, with the nearest stations being the Foggy Bottom station and the Rosslyn Station, across the river.
