Five miles northwest of central D.C., American University has taught students in liberal arts and research fields since 1893. It has a very diverse student body, with 144 countries being represented. If you would like to visit the University, the Admissions Welcome Center gives tours Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with reservations required, available at American University's website. The Welcome Center is located on the second floor of the Katzen Arts Center of the university, with free underground parking available on the P2 garage level if you reserve a tour. While at the university, visit the Bender Arena, home of the American University Eagles. Basketball, volleyball, and wrestling events are held here, as well as concerts. Or, tour the Kreeger Museum nearby to view outstanding 19th and 20th century works of art. The Washington National Cathedral is also nearby, featuring beautiful architecture and grounds, and the highest lookout point you can get to in Washington, D.C. You may also desire to attend an event at the McLean Gardens Ballroom, which hosts special events in a place historically known to presidents and socialites as the only place to be. The Friendship Recreation Center, otherwise known as Turtle Park, is a great place to go as well, offering play areas and sport courts and fields just across the street from American University.
