We are just north of Madison Square Park and within walking distance to the Flatiron Building and the Empire State Building. The Carlton on Madison Avenue heralds the return of opulence and style to the Madison Park district of Manhattan.
Recently restored by renowned architect David Rockwell of Rockwell & Associates, the beaux-arts hotel dates back to 1904 and was designed by Harry Allen Jacobs. The lobby features a two-story waterfall, elegantly designed custom furnishings and all of the high tech needs for today's modern traveler. Accommodations are some of the largest in New York City featuring 317 guestrooms and suites. The Carlton on Madison Avenue is home to Geoffrey Zakarian's Country Restaurant and Cafe.

Just spent 3 nights on a business trip. Room was nicely appointed and decently sized for NYC standards. The front desk staff were very helpful regarding a package that was couriered to the hotel for me. They quickly made sure it was received and put in my room. I did not use the restaurant but it looked quite decent. I had a meeting at the hotel bar and service was quite good. Location and price were also good. Coomon areas such as the lobby and restaurant and the rooms are quite nice but the hallways are starting to show a bit of wear and tear. « less

Only stayed one night but it seemed good enough, somewhat irritated on arrival so find I had been issued the wrong room and had to get another. It was also annoying, if not bizzare, for the concierge to insist I accessed my case (having left it there after check out) in a public area rather than the store. All bedroom doors slammed without any though given to soundproofing the frames, so it was noisy at night. « less

This hotel was selected by a culinary tour we booked, and since I have not been in New York for a few years, I was pleased it was in a neighborhood I was familiar with.
Pros: The location is good for getting around as it has 3-4 subway lines within a 1-5 block walk. It is also a couple blocks from Madison Park which is lovely and has a Shake Shack. Many other excellent restaurants are in the neighborhood and the Eataly Italian food emporium is close. The staff at the hotel was generally attentive and friendly. The food service - breakfast, lunch and bar was good. There was a beauty salon nearby.
Cons: Our room faced Madison Ave which turned out to have a very boisterous night club across the street. Merriment continued on several nights past 3 AM. Our room was comfortable but draperies were off hooks and furniture was a bit scuffed and worn/torn, in need of a make-over. I also noticed housekeeping did not clean the floors ever day. We were also given a disabled room which meant clothes hanging in the closet touched the floor. Plus other minor inconveniences.
I did not feel this was up to Autograph Collection standards. « less

We chose the Carlton for a four night break from the UK. We took pot-luck with a standard room: it had a small bed, and as it overlooked an alley there was very little daylight. It would also have been nice to have in-room tea/coffee making facilities instead of having to travel floors down to acquire it from the hotel's business centre. But apart from that it was very comfortable - and amazingly quiet for the centre of New York! The reception staff and 'Carlton' the concierge were amazingly helpful, as were the maids. But we experienced somewhat erratic service at the bar and restaurant. Hotel breakfast, if it is not included as part of a package, is shockingly expensive, and of very poor quality. But we did have an utterly amazing dinner in the Millesime restaurant one evening: husband cited the steak he ate as one of the 'best,ever'. The staff in the bar at night gave the impression that they couldn't wait to get home. The hotel is certainly visually very stunning, and the location would be hard to beat. We'd stay again. « less
