Property Description

We are a relaxed oasis of unconventional hospitality, where warm service and a friendly, quirky atmosphere will make you feel as though you're staying with family. After a day's hot and dusty meandering, sit on the terrace with an ice cold Tusker (or three) and watch the last rays of Kenya's orange sun disappear behind the iconic Ngong hills. Let the kids loose in the garden, where they can find a jungle gym, the resident dog (and a soccer ball in the bushes if they're lucky) to keep them amused. Make yourself at home in one of our 5 unique and spacious rooms, and take a ramble through the lush grounds. Cheer on your favourite sports teams on the big screen in the bar, inspire those green fingers with a visit to our garden centre or pamper yourself in our beauty salon This beautiful yet quirkily designed B&B arose from a derelict colonial home that belonged to the Purdy family in the 1950's. It's changed occupations a few times since then, but now shines in its new role as the Purdy Arms; watering hole and restaurant, homely B&B, playpen for all ages. Most of the original features remain; hence it's unique mix of old and new, an idiosyncratic restoration. We opened in mid November 2012, with our bar being affectionately called “The Rehab,” a throw-back to one of the houses previous vocations. Situated on 22 acres, the main building overlooks lush gardens full of indigenous trees and resident wildlife; including vervet monkeys, duikers, a pair of owls and a couple of our regulars. The restaurant offers a choice of fine dining or good old pub grub, that can be enjoyed in the bar, out on the terrace or even in our private dining area. We are not a big chain hotel with standardized rooms that caters to the masses, and we don't aim to be. Our 5 unique rooms each have a different character and appeal; the only common theme between them is the homespun atmosphere they radiate. As owners, we have extensive experience of Kenya, as well as the restaurant and tourism industry. We have created a friendly, laid back home away from home. We are more than happy to help in any way we can in order to make your stay an enjoyable one. The plot is surrounded by an electric fence and has 24 hour security, a standby generator, ample parking and solar heaters for water. Free wi-fi will ensure those who want to will stay connected. We are just 16km away from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and 8km away from Wilson Airport, where most of the internal safari flights depart from, we can arrange airport transfers for you. Our fine dining menu features local flavours and exotic dishes from overseas mixed with a little nostalgic English pub grub for good measure. We cater for kids and vegetarians too. Our food can be enjoyed in the spacious dining area, under the sunshades on the terrace, or even on our picnic tables in the garden. Our great kitchen team and friendly waiters are on hand to ensure your glasses are full and your plates are empty. We are one of the best watering holes in Karen. Fact. Frequented by locals and visitors alike, there's always a buzz about the bar in the evenings, no matter what day of the week. All major sports events are shown on our two big projector screens. There's a juke box with tunes from all eras for those that want to bust out some moves, and we regularly host raucous quiz nights or themed nights, usually in aid of charity. Plans are underway to start a microbrewery, but until then we stock a range of local and imported beers and ales, as well as an extensive array of wines and spirits. We aim to please, and The Purdy Arms is a lot more than just a B&B, bar and restaurant. The Potting Shed is our lovely garden centre located on the right hand side of the driveway as you enter the gates. There's a fantastic selection of plants and trees, as well as pots and friendly advice from our team. For those inclined to a cleaner hobby, our Beauty Salon offers haircuts, massages, waxing, manicures and pedicures. There's always art exhibited in our bar, ranging from stunning wildlife photographs to intriguing abstract paintings. We also have a small conference room and a 5-a-side pitch available for hire. We are not a big chain hotel with standardized rooms that caters to the masses, and we don't aim to be. Our rooms are as different as they are homely, but each one has Purdy Arms soul running through every fibre. They are all en-suite, with a living area, satellite TV, free WiFi and tea and coffee facilities. A mouth watering full English breakfast, included in the price, will give you enough fuel to take on the day. So if it's a romantic weekend, a city stopover, a family get-away or a business trip, we've got a space you can call your own.
