Nestled in the mountains of West Virginia Cass Scenic Railroad State Park offers excursions and overnight stays that transport you back in time to relive an era when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life. Cass is a popular tourist destination and provides lodging for visitors to Nature s Mountain Playground in Pocahontas County WV. The town of Cass remains relatively unchanged. Twenty restored two-story company houses now rented as vacation cottages add to the charm and atmosphere of the town. The houses are original to Cass a turn-of-the-century logging town. These 3 4 5 and 6 bedroom cottages houses have been modernized and feature bathrooms and fully equipped kitchens television cooking utensils tableware towels dishcloths and linens. The company houses all have the same basic look but have been personalized by the former owners each with a unique appeal. There are no telephones in the houses. Wi-Fi is available throughout the town. The Cass Scenic Railroad is the same line built in 1901. The locomotives are the same Shay locomotives used in Cass and other areas or more than a half-century. Many of the passenger cars are original logging flat-cars that have been refurbished. From the company store and museum to the train depot you ll find an abundance of things to do at the historic Cass Railroad. If you choose to take one of our train excursions the real excitement begins The great pistons of the carefully restored Shay locomotive will start pulsing driven by hundreds of pounds of steam pressure. The shaft begins turning the wheels find traction and the locomotive begins to move. With thick black smoke belching from its stack the train pulls away from the station. Nearby destinations to Cass Scenic Railroad include Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort Green Bank National Observatory Monongahela National Forest Greenbrier River Trail and other State Parks and Forests.
